BIO
Annie Lok (b. 1982 in Canberra, ACT/Ngunawal Country) is a collage artist, primarily constructing her pieces from personal and found photographic imagery, branching out from traditional cut and paste methods to digital technology.
Lok has an extensive education, in both practicing and theorising art and objects:
She obtained a Bachelors degree in Visual Art from the formerly known Australian National University Canberra School of Art from 2002 to 2004, then relocated to Melbourne in 2006 to find her creative voice through practice and exhibition. After moving to the Southern Tablelands regional in New South Wales, just outside of the Australian Capital Territory in 2015, Lok completed a Graduate Diploma of Studies in 2018, and Masters in Art History and Curatorial Studies, all from the Australian National University School of Art and Design, or ANU SOAD. During her time at the ANU SOAD, Lok deepened her interests in Digital Art and the artistic and theoretical constructs concerning the ‘gaze’, from both male and female perspectives. Her life though has not been without complications:
Partway through her Masters program Lok suffered physical injury due to a workplace accident, rupturing two discs in her lower back. Having undergone surgery in an attempt to correct the problem, as well as intensive physiotherapy and pain management programs, Lok still lives with both chronic pain and physical limitations. This has made permanent impressions on the artist – emotionally as well as physically – but more interestingly, on her art practice. Her ongoing Rabbit Holes series developed out of a need for distraction, forming part of her arsenal for coping with any daily challenges.
Lok is represented by fYRE Gallery, Braidwood, and lives in Mount Fairy, NSW with her p
artner and daughter.
