Peep Show series

Peep Show stems from Lok’s continuous interrogation of figuration in art, by investigating the concept and power of the ‘Gaze’. Each collage in the series aim to recreate the intimate and wondrous experience of peering inside an optical looking device, such as a kaleidoscope or stereoscope, with the insertion of female figures in a variety of physical and emotional states, and embolden text, within the composition. These works are pieced together using personal photographs and found imagery and graphics, all constructed on a collage building application.
Certain pictorial elements are at play: symmetry, balance, colour theory, and form, yet when a deeper analysis is undertaken, the underlying concepts can be considered: “I create a space whereby the viewer - as the voyeur - and the subject – the female protagonists – participate in a power struggle: what is the consequence – if any - of looking?”
